Chapter Twenty-One

Spaniards, Aztecs and Mayans, oh my.

He bent and picked up one of my chocolate croissants and took a healthy bite.

“These are very good. Cortez was so limited in his thinking. I had to work very hard indeed to get him to bring the cocoa beans and samples back to Spain with him. He was obsessed with getting his titles back and getting out of trouble with the king. It’s a good thing for him I was there, watching out.”

He sat there chewing, looking so normal.

“Tell me, Jane Bond,” he said, “why do you chase after things so single-mindedly? You must admit I have given you numerous warnings to back off and stop chasing these shadows you chase. But you persist. Why?”

I swallowed my bite, mostly whole. “I’m not sure. It’s something built in.”

He took another bite. “It does sound a little like what keeps me going. I’ve been around far too long, and yet I keep hanging on looking for final solutions. Cortez was a dead end. Literally, really.” He grinned at me. “Natural causes, they say.”

He looked over at Jess. Bailey and Jess had both been trying to make themselves small. “Jane, I’d like to show you something interesting. What do you think?”

“Oh, no, I think I’m fine. I’ve seen so many interesting things today that I’m just about tapped out.”

He smiled and tapped me on the forehead. “You really shouldn’t lie, Jane. You do not do it well.”

He waved a hand at Jess. She stood up and pulled a gun out of her pocket and shot our man through the head, right between the eyes. Then she sat down and waited, like she had been put into idle mode or something.

He said, “You see, this will bring some of your thoughts to a close. You cannot kill me with a gun or anything of the sort. And I can come into anywhere you are and do anything I wish. I told you that Jean had none of my creatures in her, and I was telling the truth, unlike you, Jane Bond.”

He turned his head away, and then back at me. There was no sign of the hole.

He took another croissant and then stood up. “Well, I believe today’s object lesson is at an end, Jane Bond. I’m sure I’ll see you in Mexico, though. Since it seems unlikely that this lesson will chase you away. Keep in mind that sooner or later, someone you care for will be killed. I can’t really help that, it’s a sort of retribution that follows me.”

He walked down the hallway and I heard the door open and close.

Seconds later, Olive and Jeanette came running into the room. “What happened? We saw a detect!”

I sighed and pointed to the cluster of brain, blood, and bone clinging to the front of the sofa cushion. “You know any good dry cleaners?”

They both looked at the mess. “I don’t suppose either of you saw anyone leaving when you came in? You DID come in the front door, right?”

Slowly, they nodded.
